Somme Advisory Council

Description

The Somme Advisory Council is a consultative body in Northern Ireland, typically composed of local councillors, that oversees matters related to the Somme Association and related commemorative activities. It involves representatives from various local councils, such as Belfast City Council and Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council. 

 

  • Purpose: It functions as a working group to manage relationships with the Somme Association, which maintains the Somme Heritage Centre and commemorates the Battle of the Somme.
  • Membership: Includes elected officials such as Alderman Sonia Copeland and Councillor Tracy Kelly (Belfast), and Alderman Ian Burns and Alderman Mark Baxter (Armagh, Banbridge & Craigavon).
  • Activities: The council reviews yearly subscriptions to the Somme Association and updates on activities related to the Somme, particularly concerning war memorials and education.
  • Context: It operates within the context of local council involvement in Northern Irish, British, and Irish military history, often linked with organizations like the Royal British Legion.
